Fantastic epic! I have been wanting to read this series for some time. I saw they were on sale for kindle a few months ago and bought them all! Well, I'm going to get the newer ones in hardback.I am slowly getting the audible editions as well since it's easier to listen during my cancer treatments. The narration is great!
I hope I love all of the books the same or more! This first one is a great coming of age novel filled with great characters! Thank you!
Happy Reading!

The Magic of Recluce Recluce series Book 1 L E Modesitt Jr 9780812505184 Books Reviews
I'm now on volume 4 of this series and have thoroughly enjoyed reading every one. Modesitt is a good storyteller, able to serve up a generous supply of fantastical tales for which this reader enthusiastically suspended disbelief. Why? The characters are endearing. One cares what happens to the strong, vivid characters that spring from Modesitt's imagination. Each volume can stand alone as a complete story, but the story is carried on by the next generation in each new volume, each volume different, each always working toward the peaceful co-existence of magic and mechanical inventiveness in a world where rival religions that worship chaos and order proclaim that they can only be incompatible.
this is the first book in this series but is the next to last in the arc of the storyline. as a stand alone it is not worth 5 stars but as a part of the whole of Recluce's world it is. it's the author's first entry into this amazing world. I read this over 20 yrs ago and was spellbound. recently reread this and was surprised at how uncritical I was the first time. however, I have read every book Modesitt has written over the years since then and am so glad it did.
if any of this interests you into putting your toe in the Recluce pool go to the web and get the list in story order and begin. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Recluse is only one of several island-continents on this unnamed world. The people of Recluce are adherents of the rules and magic of order. Whenever they find one of their youngsters who exhibits excessive amounts of chaos, that person is sent to the continent of Candar, to choose either the ways of chaos or order.
This is the story of Lerris, a youth who seems to have both chaos and order, but who doesn't know which he would be better at. After many adventures, he is in a position to make a decision.
I picked this book up after finding a suggestion for it while searching for books similar to The Warded Man. I really enjoyed the pacing of this book, something I know a lot of people may find annoying about it. I love how, while reading, you feel like you are the character of the book. Instead of spanning just a few days or weeks, you follow this person through years of the most important part of his life - those that define who he will become. Some points did have me a bit frustrated, but that's just personal preference on the story, not anything wrong with the writing or characters.
The magic of Recluce is what gave me the most grief while reading. I'm not a big fan of the "magic is nothing but will and emotion" magic systems. I enjoy the more structured style of magic system, such as those found in Harry Potter or The Warded Man. With spells that can be learned and techniques to be mastered. However, I still enjoyed the book a great deal and do not regret my purchase at all.
I originally read this in its originally issued Paperback. Then I discovered more than a decade later, it could be had for "cheap" as a E-book.
I can say that the story holds up pretty good. The novels that follow it do not warp the backstory that this novel represents which represents an authorial triumph.
Read it again!
This story is what really got me into woodworking as a teen and still into it 20 plus years later. Was a great reread as I go back to the world of recluse to read the old and the new ones I haven’t read yet.
This is an adventure full of tension, action, magic, and a little romance. Frequently funny, now and then deeply sad, marbled with mysteries, and populated with living characters who move against a fascinating background of land and culture, it is especially notable for the rich storytelling possibilities of its unique conception of magic. The pacing is good, the dialogue is clever, and the narrative style has some stylish quirks that tend to grow on one - for example, a heavy reliance on onomatopoeic sound effects, such as "Wheeeee eeeee" for Gairloch's neighing. I would only ding the writing for a couple of glaring redundancies, like a paragraph that says the same thing twice, or a sentence that uses the same adjective twice. These are possibly the kind of goofs that happen when a writer produces a tremendous amount of material in a short time; even editors can only work so fast without missing things.
Fantastic epic! I have been wanting to read this series for some time. I saw they were on sale for kindle a few months ago and bought them all! Well, I'm going to get the newer ones in hardback.
