What a great book! Just great writing and such a plot! This kept me reading steady for two days as I could barely put the book down, and by the end I was so filled with emotion I cannot adequately put into words what an impact it has on me!
The author deals with several cultures and races in lives that intertwine as she tells the story of a racially mixed child of Chinese-Chilean descent who is orphaned at birth and raised by grandparents of both cultures at the latter end if the 19th century. The brutality of war, racial prejudice and class difference is seen through the eyes of this little girl as she struggles to find her roots and understand why she's different and with so many insecurities. The major characters throughout her years of growing up shape her into who she is into adulthood.
It's a fantastic read and so very interesting with both sides of the political spectrum discussed and dealt with as she lives in San Fransisco, Chile and Europe and strives for independence as a mature woman. Great book for readers of historical fiction and romance.... Very real and will pull at your heart strings. Definite five stars!

Like many other reviewers, I have also read The House of the Spirits and Daughter of Fortune. My enjoyment of Ms. Allende's work has decreased with each novel. The House of the Spirits is an excellent book very well researched, vivid, funny, passionate and memorable. Daughter of Fortune got off to a good start, but languished in the second half of the book. I was one of the few people I knew who didn't like the book very much. Portrait in Sepia continues the decline. Ms. Allende appears to have done very little research to back up her writing this time, despite the fact that there are many sources to turn to when writing about, for example, San Francisco and Chinatown at the turn of the century. Her characters are so underdeveloped that I had no feeling for any of them - my favorite character was the English butler-turned-husband, whose role was relatively minor (although all of the characters seemed minor...). She must have had a deadline to meet or perhaps she's lost her passion for writing because there is little in Portrait to remind me of the brilliance of The House of the Spirits.

The Chilean-Peruvian war were unfamiliar. The ethnic conflicts of the period, especially in California, were described well by the characters. The difference of the lives the haves and have nots did not differ much from today. Excellent read.
Research and writing wonderful! I have enjoyed many of her novels. Only criticism, she some times doesn't finish up with minor, but significant, characters - I am left wondering.
It took quite a few pages before I was really absorbed but then it was hard to put it down.
Isabel Allende has been one of my favorite authors since "House of the Spirits." Although I have read many of her other books, Allende is such a prolific writer that one thing and another has kept me from keeping up with her. I have finally gotten around to reading "Portrait in Sepia" and it did not disappoint. I am presently reading "Daughter of Fortune." Just a tip if you're considering reading either of these two, read "Daughter of Fortune" first. Although they are really not prequel/sequel, they share characters in common and "Daughter of Fortune" is set in an earlier time historically. Allende's talent at characterization, description, lyrical language, historical accuracy, etc. etc. etc. (I could go on and on) is second to none. It definitely goes on my favorites list.
I really enjoyed "Daughter of Fortune" and looked forward to reading this 2001 sequel. I wasn't disappointed. Ms. Allende is a fine storyteller. It must have been difficult for her to weave the important elements of the two books together but it all fell together flawlessly. Again, I was swept into the story, which starts out in San Francisco and moves back to Chile, where the saga or these characters first began. The historical detail and the setting of time and place fascinated me. And so did the development of the characters who sprung to life from the pages.
There's Aurora del Valle, the granddaughter of two very powerful women. One is the heroine of the prior book, a woman who followed one love to California but found another. And the other is the wealthy Paulina del Valle, a large woman whose business sense created a fortune for her family. Both are very different and both love their granddaughter, who gradually learns the depth of their love as well as the family secrets.
There's tragedy in this book as well as romance. There's war and peace. And there are lots of contrasts between the places that are so well drawn that I felt I was actually living there. There's also a resolution as we look forward to the future of the characters in 20th century. Hopefully, the author will continue the story. Recommended.
