The opening chapter of this book is stunning, its what made me buy the book in the first place. After that, the rest of the book is very easy to tune out. i didnt find any sections to be particularly intriguing and barely remember the names of the characters. I know its supposed to be a reimagining of wuthering heights but its really barely that guys, its mostly just a slew of independant but interrelated short stories about orphans and abandonment. I promise you that's it.

A profound brilliantly written novel. It hurts and delights. Caryl Phillips is a literary genius.
Brilliant work by Caryl Phillips...
Caryl Phillips is one of my favorite authors and "Lost Child" fortifies that position in my ranking hierarchy.
brilliant writer
Well written but bounces around quite a bit so it is hard complete in a smooth fashion. It would probably make an excellent TV series. As a book I lost track if I stepped away from it for to long and picked it up again.
I gave up half way through. I generally liked it but it seems relentlessly down-beat. Kept hoping for the first character to re-appear, or for SOMETHING to happen.
Caryl Phillips is a favorite of mine. His personal history is interesting in light of his chosen topics. He knows the territory and does a good mapping of the complexities of the people in his novels. Part of this book gives the back story on Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights. No wonder he had so many issues.
